To the south and south-east of Sebastopol lies a roughly quadrant-shaped mass of hills. They are usually called the Chersonese Uplands, but are sometimes referred to as the Sapoune Heights.
The southern edge of these uplands is known as the Sapoune Ridge or the Sapoune Escarpment. Lord Raglan postioned himself at a spot on this scarp to observe the battle of Balaklava.
The north-eastern sector of the uplands is composed of a number of ridges and ravines radiating from Sebastopol. It was across part of these that the battle of Inkerman was fought.
The northernmost ridge is sometimes called Careenage Ridge and sometimes Inkerman Ridge. At its north end is a hill sometimes called Mount Sapoune and sometimes Mount Inkerman.
The Inkerman Heights lie on the other side of the River Tchernaya. At their foot are the remains of an ancient stronghold usually referred to as Inkerman Ruins but sometimes simply as Inkerman.
