Scope of the indexes

The index of people includes every person mentioned in the documents in the Ben Smyth / Kinglake archive, and all their authors and recipients, if known. The index is not intended to provide biographical information on those named. Details are provided only to enable a specific identification to be made. Eyewitness in the Crimea provides succinct information on the whole career of those who are indexed in that work.

The index of places includes every place mentioned in the documents in the Ben Smyth / Kinglake archive, although there is some latitude in what constitutes a ‘place’. As many as possible are shown on the maps, which also include some places not mentioned in the documents. These places too are included in the index.

Spelling

An indication is given in the ‘also known as’ column of names which are variously spelt in the documents and other works. For the most part the spelling of Russian names follows the documents themselves. The index of places includes the alternative names by which many sites were known.

Ranks

In the index of people only one rank is given, generally that which is most commonly associated with the individual’s Crimean service. Not only did service ranks change with promotion, but a soldier could also hold more than one rank at the same time. For a brief explanation of the system, see the “Author’s Preface” to Into Battle!
